Since its creation, Spéos has shown a great interest in the History of Photography and continues to contribute to its evolution. Spéos has performed and sponsored various activities and publications in this field :

Nicéphore Niépce House (first opened in 2001)

Spéos restored the Niépce House, where the world's earliest known photograph was taken. This house, laden with history has been transformed into a museum and a classroom for workshops to pass on to a new generation the knowledge of Niépce and Daguerre’s processes.
The publication of the book «Niépce, Correspondances et Papiers» by Manuel Bonnet and Jean-Louis Marignier was edited and published by Niépce’s House in collaboration with Spéos on December 5th 2003.

The two-volume work consists of 1600 pages, around 700 authentic documents, half of which were never published before, covering a period from 1761 to 1842. The books cover the life of Nicéphore Niépce and his family.
Each document is transcribed in extenso with foot notes added to clarify the texts.
